The "One Cup" Myth

Why is it so hard to get this right?

Most cat food bags suggest feeding 1/2 to 1 cup of dry food per day. This is a trap.

Dry food is incredibly calorie-dense. It has very little water content, meaning the calories are concentrated.

• A standard 10lb indoor cat only needs about 200-240 calories a day.
• A single cup of dry food often contains 450-500 calories.

If you follow the bag, you are feeding your cat double their daily requirement. That is the equivalent of a human eating two Thanksgiving dinners every single day.

How to Use the Calculator

This tool acts as a metabolic audit for your feline.

Step 1: The Weigh-In Weigh your cat. If you don't have a baby scale, weigh yourself holding the cat, then subtract your own weight. Accuracy matters here—cats are small, so 1lb makes a huge difference.

Step 2: Define the Lifestyle This is the secret sauce.

• Neutered/Indoor: This is 95% of house cats. Once a cat is fixed, their metabolism drops by 20-30%.
• Intact/Active: Choose this only if your cat is not fixed or spends hours roaming outside hunting.
• Weight Loss: If your vet said "fluffy needs a diet," use this setting. It calculates 80% of their maintenance needs.
• Kitten: Kittens are energy furnaces. They need 2.5x the calories of an adult to grow!

Step 3: Get the Number Hit "Calculate Daily Fuel." The number you see is their Total Daily Calorie Budget.

Applying the Number (The Hard Part)

Once you have your number (e.g., 220 kcal), you need to look at your food label. Look for kcal/cup or kcal/can.

• Scenario: Your cat needs 220 kcal. Your dry food is 440 kcal/cup.
• The Math: 220/440=0.5 cups.
• The Reality: That is half a cup for the entire day.

The "Volume" Hack

If you feed your cat half a cup of dry kibble, they will scream at you. Their stomach will feel empty. This is why vets recommend Wet Food.

Wet food is 75% water. It takes up much more space in the stomach for the same amount of calories.

• Dry Food: 1/2 cup = 220 calories (Tiny volume)
• Wet Food: 2.5 cans (3oz) = 220 calories (Huge volume!)

By switching to wet food, your cat eats a larger meal, feels fuller, gets better hydration (vital for kidney health), and stops waking you up at 5 AM.

The "Treat Tax"

Look at the "Treat Limit" in the calculator results. It’s usually very low (around 20-30 calories).

• A few "Temptations" treats? 2 calories each. Fine.
• A slice of cheddar cheese? 110 calories.

One slice of cheese is half your cat's daily intake.
