What is “Agentic AI”? (The 4 Pillars)

Before you use the calculator, you need to understand what makes an AI “Agentic.” It comes down to four critical variables, which our tool measures.

1. Reasoning Depth (The Brain) A chatbot gives a linear answer. An Agent uses “Chain of Thought” reasoning.

• Example: If you ask “How do I fix my car?”, an Agent doesn’t just list steps. It asks itself: “What creates that noise? I should search for diagrams first. Then I will compare the user’s description.” It plans before it acts.

2. Tool Access (The Hands) An AI without tools is a brain in a jar.

• Level 0: Text in, Text out.
• Level 5: Can browse the web (Search).
• Level 10: Can execute code, access APIs, and control your mouse/keyboard. True agency requires the ability to impact the real world.

3. The Autonomy Loop (The Will) This is the big one.

• Human-in-the-Loop: The AI drafts an email, but you have to click “Send.”
• Autonomous: The AI drafts the email, checks your calendar, realizes you’re busy, rewrites the email to be shorter, and sends it—all without you watching. This is often called an Agentic Loop (Plan → Act → Observe → Correct).

4. Memory (The Context) A chatbot forgets you when you close the tab. An Agent remembers. It uses Vector Databases(Long-term memory) to recall what you said three weeks ago, learning your preferences over time.

How to Use the Calculator

This widget is designed to assess the “IQ” and “Agency” of your system.

Step 1: Rate the Reasoning Slide the first bar. Is your AI just answering questions (Level 1)? Or is it using “Tree of Thoughts” to explore multiple possibilities before answering (Level 10)?

Step 2: Define Tool Access Does it have internet access? Can it run Python scripts? Can it book flights? The more APIs it touches, the higher the score.

Step 3: Set Autonomy How much babysitting does it need? If it can self-correct when it encounters an error (e.g., “That website is down, I’ll try another one”), that is high autonomy.

Step 4: Check Memory Does it rely on RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation) to access company documents? Push the slider up.

The 4 Levels of AI Agency

When you hit “Run Simulation,” the calculator classifies your AI into one of four tiers:

Level 1: The Chatbot (Score 0-19)

• Definition: A conversational interface.
• Use Case: Customer support FAQ, writing emails, coding help.
• Verdict: Useful, but passive.

Level 2: The Copilot (Score 20-44)

• Definition: An assistant that works alongside you.
• Use Case: GitHub Copilot, Microsoft 365 Copilot. It suggests, you approve.
• Verdict: Productivity booster.

Level 3: The Agent (Score 45-74)

• Definition: A system that can complete multi-step tasks.
• Use Case: “Book me a table for two at an Italian restaurant near me.” The AI uses Maps, OpenTable, and Calendar APIs to finish the job.
• Verdict: The current cutting edge.

Level 4: Autonomous System (Score 75+)

• Definition: A system that manages itself.
• Use Case: Devin (the AI software engineer). You say “Build this app,” and it writes code, fixes its own bugs, deploys the server, and tests the UI.
• Verdict: The holy grail.
