To get an accurate result, you cannot just enter random numbers. You must follow the HVAC Design Protocol (J, S, and D).
1. Start with Manual J (Airflow/CFM)
Before you touch this calculator, you must know how much air each room needs. This is called your CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute).
- Evidence: According to ANSI/ACCA 1 Manual J, load calculations must account for insulation, window U-values, and directional orientation. A 2,000 sq. ft. home typically requires 1,000 to 1,200 total CFM.
2. Determine Available Static Pressure (ASP)

- The Math: Add the physical length of the duct to the “Equivalent Length” of every fitting (elbows, tees, boots).
4. The Friction Rate (The Holy Grail)

$$FR = \frac{ASP \times 100}{TEL}$$
