What is “New Style” JSA?

1. Non-Means Tested: Your savings are irrelevant. Your partner’s income is irrelevant.
2. Contribution Based: Eligibility is based solely on your NI record over the last 2 tax years. If you’ve been working as an employee, you likely qualify.
3. The Pension Trap: This is the only catch for wealthy claimants. If you have a private pension paying out while you are unemployed, it can reduce your JSA.

How to Use the Calculator

This tool is designed for the “Asset Rich, Cash Flow Paused” demographic.

Step 1: The NI Check (Tab 1)

• Select your age (25+ gets the higher rate of £84.80 a week).
• Confirm your National Insurance status.
• The Reality Check: If you were self-employed and only paid Class 2/4 NI, the calculator will flag you as ineligible. This benefit is primarily for employees (Class 1).

Step 2: The Pension Stress Test (Tab 2) This is where high-net-worth individuals often get caught out.

• Enter your weekly private pension income.
• The Rule: You can receive up to £50 a week from a private pension without penalty. Above that, JSA is reduced £1 for every £1.
• Example: If your pension pays £100/week, your JSA is reduced by £50. The calculator visualizes this “clawback” instantly.

Step 3: The “Runway” (Tab 3) JSA isn’t forever. It is a bridge.

• The calculator projects your total payout over the maximum 182 days (6 months).
• Seeing a figure of £2,204.80 (26 weeks x £84.80) often shifts the mindset from “it’s not worth the hassle” to “that covers my utility bills for six months.”
