RIT GPA Calculator
Enter courses, credits and letter grades. The tool uses RIT’s 4.0 plus/minus grade-point conversions.

Weighted GPA computed as sum(credits × grade points) ÷ total credits.

An RIT GPA calculator computes a student’s term or cumulative Grade Point Average on RIT’s 4.0 plus/minus scale by converting each letter grade to its grade-point value, multiplying by course credits (quality points), summing those quality points, and dividing by the total graded credits.
RIT GPA Calculator — What it is and how to use it
What this calculator does
This RIT GPA calculator helps RIT students quickly and accurately estimate their term or cumulative GPA using RIT’s standard plus/minus 4.0 scale. It converts letter grades (A, A-, B+, etc.) into grade points, multiplies each by the course’s credit hours to compute quality points, and returns a weighted average (GPA = total quality points ÷ total graded credits). The calculator also visualizes each class’s contribution using an interactive bar chart and shows a compact gauge that reflects your computed GPA. The grade-to-point mapping used by this tool follows RIT’s commonly used plus/minus conversion (for example: A = 4.00, A- = 3.67, B+ = 3.33, B = 3.00, B- = 2.67, etc.).
Why weighting by credits matters
Not all classes are equal: a 4-credit lecture has more impact on your GPA than a 1-credit lab. The weighted calculation (credits × grade points) reflects how much each class influences your overall result. The visualization included in the tool highlights which classes are driving your GPA — quick visual feedback that helps you prioritize studying or consider retakes strategically.
Step-by-step: using the calculator
1. Paste the code into WordPress
Place the HTML/JS snippet (provided above) into a Custom HTML block or your theme’s custom code area. The widget is responsive and constrained to a maximum width of 780px so it will fit comfortably between two sidebars in most WordPress themes.
2. Add your courses
For every course:
- Enter the course name (optional but helpful).
- Enter the credit hours (use decimals like 0.5 where applicable).
- Select the letter grade from the dropdown (A, A-, B+, etc.).
The table allows you to add or remove rows; you can add as many courses as you need.
3. Calculate
Click Calculate GPA. The results area shows:
- Term GPA to three decimal places (weighted value),
- Total graded credits,
- A bar chart showing each course’s “quality point” contribution (credits × grade points),
- A gauge indicator showing the numeric GPA on a 0–4 scale.
If you use Pass (P) or Satisfactory (S) grading, those are excluded from the weighted GPA calculation (consistent with common registrar handling where P/S carry no grade points). Rows with P/S are shown but do not change GPA.
Tips for interpreting results
- Rounding: The calculator rounds GPA to three decimals for readability. Official transcripts may round or truncate differently.
- Retakes: If a course is retaken and your institution replaces the old grade, you should only enter the grade that is used by RIT for GPA computation. This tool will calculate based on the rows you provide.
- Transfer / special grades: Some grades (audit, incomplete, pass, satisfactory) do not generate quality points and will not change GPA — enter them to keep a complete record but note they don’t affect the numeric result.
Visuals that help decisions
Using the bar chart, you can immediately see which courses contribute the most quality points — this helps decide where a grade change (like a retake) would have the greatest impact. The gauge provides an at-a-glance view to know whether you’re above or below key thresholds (e.g., a 3.0 cutoff for certain opportunities).
Accessibility & WordPress integration notes
- The widget is small, self-contained, and white-background to match most content areas.
- Use the WordPress Custom HTML block for the simplest integration.
- Ensure the page or post is not using additional restrictive CSS that forces overflow: hidden on container elements; the code is responsive but needs standard theme containers to render correctly.
Disclaimer
This calculator is an educational tool and produces estimates only. It uses commonly published RIT plus/minus grade conversions but is not an official RIT transcript or record. The official GPA on your academic record is determined by the RIT Registrar and may be subject to institutional rules (grade replacement policies, transfer credit rules, etc.). Always consult official RIT resources or your academic advisor for decisions depending on exact GPA calculations or policy clarifications.
FAQ
Q: Which grade scale does this calculator use?
A: It uses RIT’s commonly used 4.0 plus/minus conversion (A = 4.00, A- = 3.67, B+ = 3.33, B = 3.00, B- = 2.67, C+ = 2.33, C = 2.00, C- = 1.67, D = 1.00, F = 0.00). Sources: institutional policy summaries and grade-conversion references.
Q: Does it include Pass or Satisfactory grades?
A: No — P and S grades are treated as non-graded and are excluded from the weighted GPA calculation. They are shown in the table but do not add grade points.
Q: Will the calculator match my official RIT transcript?
A: It will match as long as you enter the same courses and grades that RIT uses for your academic record. Registrar rules (grade replacement, graduate vs. undergraduate grading policies, dropped or late changes) may affect the official GPA; for official matters consult the Registrar or your advisor.
Q: Can I use it for cumulative GPA?
A: Yes — to estimate a cumulative GPA, enter all courses you want included (term + previous) and calculate. If RIT applies special replacement rules, you must reflect those manually.
Q: How do I change the look to match my site?
A: Modify the CSS in the snippet (the container max-width, fonts, or colors). Leave the white background and responsive width if the widget needs to sit between sidebars.
